Check Up from the Neck Up

Each month this year, our team will be focusing our Social Media posts and our growth process internally on a single theme. This month is: Check Up from the Neck Up

I’ll never forget the first time I heard Zig Ziglar talk about getting a ‘Check Up from the Neck Up’. His southern drawl really drove home the point and I bought it. What Zig was talking about was how much control we really do have; by the way we feed and train ourselves to think.

When trouble strikes, do you instantly see the glass as half full or half empty? If you take the time to look for the silver lining in every adversity you can train your brain to move in a more positive direction! We have all seen or heard of people who did the following:
  • Lost a job unexpectedly: turned the setback into a rewarding and personally satisfying career change.
  • Lost a treasured friend or family member: started a program or non-profit to heighten awareness and help others.
  • Born with or ended up with a disability: despite all odds, used what they HAD instead of focusing on what they didn’t.
We can do the same thing! Turning obstacles, hardships, tough circumstances and tremendous loss into a shining example of how to overcome the odds and it all starts with the way you approach things that happen in your life. When you see the glass as half empty, you rob yourself of the precious element of hope. You reduce your ‘OVERCOMING’ power and you easily slide into the victim mode- a powerless and painful place to exist.  ‘Just Existing’ is such a sad way to spend your precious gift of life which is why the Check Up from the Neck Up that Mr Ziglar spent so much time talking about is so critically important. Here are a few things you can do to create and maintain an environment where your brain and your attitude have the best chance of helping you succeed!

  • READ EVERY DAY: Filling your brain with positive input is like taking mental vitamins! Seek out great books and material that help you get better and stronger in all areas of your life.
  • EXERCISE: There is a TON of research that proves that physical activity release powerful (natural) chemicals into your body that help you stay more positive.
  • TAKE TIME OFF: Refreshing your body and spirit helps you refuel. When you take the time to rejuvenate you can bring more powerful and positive energy to your life.
  • SLEEP: Your body and your brain require DOWN TIME each day to function. Getting the proper amount of sleep will help you greet each new day with more awareness and heightened senses.

The next time you are feeling a little down, just ask yourself the question that Zig used to ask every audience, “When is the last time YOU got a Check Up from the Neck UP?”.
